The Brief

This narrow kitchen was previously dominated by a large, unsightly mantle,  which surrounded a range cooker. Removing it immediately created much-needed space for additional cupboards. The clients were keen to lighten the feel of the room and improve the storage so large drawers create plenty of space for pots and pans while the glazed dresser and top cupboards form an attractive feature. A small timber breakfast bar creates a link with the darker wood furniture in the adjoining lounge.

Designer's Tips

As the kitchen is quite small the light Milbourne Alabaster cabinetry enhances the sense of space. An American style fridge-freezer had to be included, but to avoid this becoming a bulky eyesore, it was framed with cabinets, one is a tall larder pull-out which, together with the fridge, provided a designated storage area for all food types. If your home has charming features try to incorporate them into the new design, as shown here with the exposed brick wall.
